Transferring a NinjaTrader lifetime license

Transferring a NinjaTrader lifetime license

You may find announcements on the internet of people that want to sell their NinjaTrader license, or maybe you want to buy one, and you might want to buy a "used" one.

This past week a client of mine asked me to help him find an old NinjaTrader license to buy. The problem was not money. He didn't want to buy a NinjaTrader license from somebody else because he wanted to get it cheaper. Instead, he had an account with a broker that no longer supports the NinjaTrader trading platform, unless your license falls into the grandfathered category.

Soon I found somebody on a forum that was trying to sell his lifetime license. Afterward, I had several questions:

  1. Are these lifetime licenses transferable?
  2. Do the buyer input the transferred license key and hopes the seller never tries to reuse it?
  3. Is it possible to link the license to a new owner?

After performing a quick search on the internet, I soon found that indeed the lifetime license is NOT transferable.

The NinjaTrader Terms of Service Agreement says that "Company grants User, pursuant to the terms and conditions of this Agreement, an exclusive and nontransferable license to use the Platform on a single computer at any one time."

It also says that "Lifetime licenses are for non-concurrent use, they are non-transferable, and can only be used by the individual that purchased the license. Lifetime licenses cannot be sold or bartered in the future and if such actions are taken the license can be terminated at Company's sole discretion"

Should you decide to buy it anyway, you should be aware that the seller could continue to use it. As you can use the license on a single computer at any one time, starting NinjaTrader platform on the second computer would cause disconnecting on the first computer. This situation can be quite harmful to your trading.

You can always buy a NinjaTrader license directly from NinjaTrader. This way, their support will be able to assist you should you encounter any problems. You can check the supported brokers here.
